While
active, the Massachusetts 27th Infantry Regiment consisted of 1,543
men and represented 163 towns from 12 different states (CT, IN, IO,
MA, MI, NC, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI and VT). In fact, the regiment
was multi-national in that one of its soldiers was from Montreal,
Canada.
Of the
1,543 men who served in the Massachusetts 27th Infantry Regiment,
1,428 men (nearly 93% of the regiment) came from 127 towns in
Massachusetts and primarily from Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire and
Hampden counties.
